Feeding Roses

24 Jan Feeding Roses

Roses love to be fed well if they are to thrive and produce abundant blooms. There are great specialised rose foods available now days which are tailor made to meet the needs of roses.

The main things to remember when feeding are:

  • Follow rates described on product. These can be different for sandy and clay soils.
  • Make sure soil is damp prior to feeding as a moist soil can conduct the nutrients through the soil and minimise the chance of you burning the root system.
  • Scatter the food under the rose but not too close to the stem which can again cause problems.
  • Water all plant foods in well after you apply them.
  • Most fertilisers last around 6-8 weeks. At this time re-apply to continue the supply of nutrients to the plant.
  • It does not matter if fertiliser is applied on the top or below the mulch as it will leach its way through to the root system either way.
