29 Jul Sydney Park – Urban Oasis
This last Sunday was Planet Ark’s National Tree Day. I personally spent the day out at the City of Sydney’s Official Tree Day site in Sydney Park in St Peters, on the fringes of the city’s south. Never having visited before I was interested to hear some of the parks history from visitors and locals who came through on the day.
Looking around this beautiful urban green space today it is hard to believe that it was used as a rubbish tip up until the early ’80s. Prior to that the area also served as a brick pit with with the chimneys from the kilns remaining as an iconic historic landmark of the area.
Now Sydney Park is a picture of urban health and vitality for residents as well as an oasis of fauna and flora in the city. It was great to see this being further enhanced on Sunday with hundreds of volunteers coming out for tree day celebrations and to get even more plants in the ground.
I was there on behalf of the Nursery & Garden Industry to show visitors how they can improve their plant/life balance in small spaces, as well as carry on the ‘more trees please’ message. It is great getting out to events such as this, especially when the participants are so enthusiastic and keen to get involved in what is such a hands-on event. This year Planet Ark celebrated the planting of their 20-millionth seedling on National Tree Day – a fair effort by anyone’s standards!
