Most roses enjoy as much sun as possible. Be sure to choose the most sunny position possible to plant your rose. A shady location can cause you all manor of problems later on down the track with your rose.

Good air flow around the rose is critical in helping to reduce the incidence of diseases such as black spot and powdery mildew. These diseases thrive in humid conditions which can accumulate if air flow is hampered by either plantings roses too close together or to other shrubs, or against hard structures. Alternatively a too windy spot can cause the rose to damage itself on its own thorns giving it a tatered look and making it suceptable to disease problems.

The correct soil is vital to a happy rose. Roses will grow well in both sandy or clay based soils as long as it is free draining. The incorporation of organic matter into the soil at planting time is perfect for achieving success and is detailed under planting.
