Sydneysiders can pick up pots of petunias and marigolds or take home punnets of herbs at the City of Sydney’s Living Colour plant giveaway this weekend.

The City’s stunning summer floral display is a highlight of the NSW gardening calendar. The end of season giveaway has proved extremely popular and this year more than 10,000 plants are up for grabs on a first-come first-served basis.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP said the free plant giveaway was a great way to green residents’ balconies, backyards or businesses.

“For the past nine weeks our city has been alive with Living Colour,” the Lord Mayor said.

“Now we’re finding new homes for these plants by giving them away, replanting them into our parks or composting them.

Members of the public will have the chance to pick up some petunias, celosia, ornamental chillies, marigolds, impatiens, apple mint, oregano, Australian spinach and other free plants to brighten your garden bed or balcony.

This summer’s Living Colour displays were extended for three weeks beyond their planned display because the plants were thriving after wetter than expected summer.

Large plants and perennial plants are replanted in parks throughout the city, while those unsuitable to give away or replant are composted into a high-quality soil mix for use in City parks and gardens.
